MRS. MARY ELIZABETH CHAMBERS HOUSTON, 91 of WINGATE, NC passed away Sunday, July 17, 2022 at Mint Hill Senior Living in Mint Hill, NC.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, 503 Maurice St., Monroe, NC. Mrs. Houston's remains will lie in repose 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the church prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Monroe, NC.
(Due to the COVID 19 Pandemic everyone attending the Service and Public Viewing are required to wear a mask or facial covering. Please use the Hand Sanitizing Station when entering and exiting the Funeral Home).
A public viewing will be held 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm Monday, July 25, 2022 at Harris Funeral Home & Cremations of Monroe, NC which is serving the Houston, Chambers and extended families.
Mrs. Houston was born in Anson County, North Carolina to the late Samuel Chambers and Bertha Jane Huntley Chambers on November 17, 1930. She attended both elementary and high school in Anson County. Elizabeth served the city of Monroe as the first female and Afro-American law enforcement officer. She went on to work for the Union County Department of Social Services for 19 years until her retirement in 1991.
Mrs. Houston was a member of the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years where she served as a Deaconess, Choir Member and Sunday School Teacher. She also served as a member of the Minister's and Deacon's Wives where she also served as President.
Mrs. Houston enjoyed reading, traveling, cooking, music and family. She attended Black's Memorial Presbyterian Church until the time of her passing. Her warm personality love for people and dedication to caring and sharing for others was a trademark with all that knew her.
Elizabeth is preceded in death death by her husband of 61 years, William Sanford Houston, Jr. a son William Sullivan Houston and step-son Curtis Watson Helms, 14 brothers and sisters. She leaves to cherish her memories three daughters, Phyllis Houston Washington of Wingate, North Carolina; Elmira Houston-White of Hollywood Hills, California; and Mazella Houston-Lehnhoff (Phillip) of Vilcabamba, Ecuador. One Sister-in-law, Cauthen Houston of Monroe, NC; One Daughter-in-law, Tijuana Cheek Houston of Greensboro,NC. Twelve grandchildren, Christopher Michael Houston (Jacqueline) of Richmond, Virginia; Ebony Nicole Houston (James) of Raleigh, North Carolina, William Sanford Houston, Jr. (Jolandra) of Sherrills Ford, North Carolina, William Robert Washington (Daniella) of Los Angeles, California; Toni Elizabeth White of Los Angeles, California; Monet Nicole White of Los Angeles, California; Katherine Elizabeth Washington (Zach) of Los Angeles, California; Yolanda Simpson of Charlotte, North Carolina; Curtis Helms, Jr. (Chashawah); Renee Barrett; Tyron Rivers (Candi) and Tasha Bowman all of Union County, North Carolina. Sixteen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and dear friends.
