Hazel (Thomas) Steele

MRS. HAZEL THOMAS STEELE, 97 of MOUNT GILEAD, NC died Thursday, March 20, 2014 at her home. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at Mount Zion A.M.E. Zion Church, Pee Dee Community, Mount Gilead, NC, with Visitation 12:30 to 1pm prior to the service at the church, Interment will follow in the  in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Steele was the oldest member of the church.  She was a daughter of the late Lyn and Edna Lilly Thomas, born September 2, 1916 in Montgomery County, North Carolina.  She attended the public schools of Montgomery County.   She was a homemaker, great-wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She was united in holy matrimony to the late Sidney G. Steele Sr., and to this union 9 children werer born.  Five children preceded her in death; Sidney, Jr., Emma, Alexander, Johnny and Johnsie. Also 3 brothers and 2 sisters preceded her in death.

Those left to cherish loving memories are one daughter; Edna Steele Stanback of the home; three sons; Leroy Steele (Vernell) of Hemingway, SC, Pittman Steele (Margaret) of Winston-Salem, NC and David Steele of the home; special grandchildren and caregivers; James Steele, Antonio Stanback, Terri Stanback, Shanna Peterkin, Keshawn Peterkin and Sondra Stanback; and she also leaves 32 grandchildren, 89 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.  Special thank you to Harold and Carolyn Story of Mt.
