Attorney Billie Ellerbe was a great friend and truly a unique individual on this earth. He was a smart and accomplished lawyer, an aware and astute champion of civic engagement, and a trail blazing role model of custodial fatherhood. All who knew him will miss his wit, humor and unfiltered truth. The UNC alumni network, especially our class of '76, will miss him.

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Billie. My teenage daughter and I lived right next door to him. We would take him food, share some laughs and listen to some of his stories. He would talk about his daughters with us a lot. He was a nice man. May you find peace in your memories with him. If you need any help please call me at 704-942-0805 or drop by.... I’m at 14614 next door to his place. I’d be happy to help out anyway I can during this difficult time-providing a meal, checking on his place or just offering a hug.

God bless you all.

Billie was one of the best conversationalists that I have ever known.
Whenever I saw Billie, mostly at the Courthouse, we would sit, talk and laugh, until the next matter was called!!!
When Billie laughed, the whole world around him lit up!!!
Billie was a fixture at the Meckenburg County Courthouse.
Without Billie among us, this world is much sadder and is certainly missing much laughter!!
RIP, My Friend!!

Billie owned the space, the room, the situation, like no other. He had a confidence and a swagger that caused all in his orbit to take notice. Once he commanded your attention, he did not disappoint, whether it was a legal 'war story,' a joke, an anecdote or sage advice. You and your great legal talents, your unique wit, and your unconquering spirit will be sorely missed by your colleagues and all who knew you. Rest in Peace, dear friend.

I wish to extend my sincerest condolences to the Ellerbe family on behalf of the Bermuda School of Music. In the limited times I got to meet Mr. Ellerbe, I found him to be a stately and straight forward gentleman. The love and respect shown for him by his daughter is a true testament to the man he was. I pray that these days of loss and sorrow will be brightened with the happy memories of your father, brother and friend.

I will miss seeing Billie in Court. Great guy, excellent lawyer and thoroughly his own man. When I was holding Court in Charlotte, he would make a point of seeing me and we would talk at length. He left us too early.

Billie appeared before me in the Mecklenburg County courts. He was a capable lawyer and conducted himself in a very professional manner. He was soft spoken and a gentleman. God bless his family during this sad time.

I am shaken by this news. Billie and I were recently together for the counselling program at UNC Law. We have done this together for years, recruited by the late Walker Blakey and his sidekick, Prof. Silverstein. It was a joy every year to see him and we enjoyed every minute together. I and the UNC Law community will miss him greatly. I will never forget him.

I will remember Mr. Ellerbe for his kindness to me when I first started practicing family law. Bill Diehl asked him to mentor me and provide a resource that I could go to about establishing my practice and he gladly obliged. It was encouraging to see another black lawyer with experience and the respect of others in his field. I took his example as one to emulate and I'm grateful for the impact that he left on the family law bar and the profession. My sincere condolences for your loss.
