Lenora Bowden Spencer was born on Tuesday, January 15, 1935, in Mount Gilead (Montgomery County) North Carolina, to Anita Susa Mae Smitherman Bowden and Sumler Bowden, Sr.  Both parents preceded her in death.

Lenora chose God as her Savior at age twelve.  She joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Mt. Gilead, NC.  Lenora played on the Mount Gilead Colored Schools Girls softball team.  She attended Peabody High School in Troy, NC, where she was a member of the girls basketball team.

Lenora was very vigorous and lively throughout her lifetime.  She was active on a daily basis.  If you said the word "Travel", she was ready to go.  She was an avid music lover who enjoyed dancing, working in her flower garden and collecting unique items, such as porcelain roosters and other antiques.  She took great pride in cooking and preparing meals for special occasions.  Lenora had a host of special friends.  Amongst a few of her most special aquaintances were Dorothy Woodberry, Clara Williams Spencer and Alice Smith.  She was a woman who posessed many wonderful qualities, whose heart was bigger than life.  She touched a part of each person who crossed her path, and for that, she will be missed and live in all of our hearts.

Lenora was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lester Edward Spencer of Eagle Springs(Moore County) NC.  The siblings preceding her in death are; Jessie Bowden (Lonnie Mae), Mary Agnes Bowden Patterson (William), Sumler Bowden Jr., Franklin Delano Bowden (Carrie) and Ruby Bowden Lewis (Billie Rae).  Two sons preceded her in death, Lester Junior Ingram (Delphine) and Gary Antoine Spencer and two grandsons, Marcus Leonardo Woodland and John Edward Woodland, Jr.

Seven surviving sisters-in-law, Barbara Little (Bobbie) Bowden (Sumler,Jr), Josephine Spencer (Levon), Pauline LeGrand (Clifton), Alberta Spencer, Linda Kay Spencer (Connell), Catherine Spencer (David) and Vivian Spencer Jones.  Two surviving brothers-in-law, Lovell Spencer and George Matthews.

Lenora loved her children, leaving them with cherished memories.  They are William Smith, Lavis Cedric Bowden, Violet Woodland (John), Beverly Bowden Horne, Louvenia Brower (Clifton); Deborah Alford (Alton), Patricia Letren (Derick), Dwayne Spencer (Shirley), Cynthia McGrigg (Frank, Jr.) and Gregory Spencer (Lorraine); two surving sisters, Myrtle Bowden Wright (George) and Evelyn Ellen Bowden.  Also cherished memories to James Horne Jr., (Rhonda), Anita Renee Horne, Janieri Horne (Ronnell Smith), Brenton Cordell Horne and Cynthia Quiana Horne.

Lenora was blessed with many wonderful nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, whom loved her dearly.
